Winter Speaker Series

  • Palmer Train Depot 610 South Valley Way Palmer, AK, 99645 United States (map)

Registration not required

When: Tuesday, April 8. Doors open at 6:30PM. Presentation begins at 7PM.

Where: We’ll meet at the Palmer Train Depot in downtown Palmer.

Is registration required? No.

About the presentation: We’ll take a brief look at historical trails in the Valley and how many are preserved through RS2477 documentation. We will also discuss how many historic trails are used recreationally today.

About Steve Charles: Growing up in Iowa and graduating with a degree in music, the first thing Steve wanted to do was to head west. After four years of teaching in Montana, he and his new wife, Marian decided to keep heading farther west to Alaska, living in Nome, Fairbanks, and now Willow. While living here, he began appreciating the tremendous recreational opportunities the Valley provided and so began his trip down the path of trail development and advocacy. Through the years he has been active in the Willow Trail Committee, State Parks Citizen Advisory Board, Mat-Su Trails and Parks Foundation, Friends of State Parks, Mat-Su and the Mat-Su Concert Band. At home and when not working on another fantastic trail project, he is either taking a hike, honkin’ on his tuba, running his sled dogs or reading something historical.

Cost to attend: This event is free for the community to attend. Donations are greatly appreciated. If you would like to contribute to the Mat-Su Trails and Parks Foundation, the organization will accept both electronic and cash donations at each speaker event. Donations are tax-deductible.

What is the winter speaker series? The Mat-Su Trails and Parks Foundation & Revel are hosting monthly educational lectures/presentations from November 2024 through April 2025. Each month we highlight a different recreation topic, connecting locals to a variety of opportunities and stories from our area.

Our goal? We hope the series sparks curiosity and encourages locals to ask questions, continue learning, and build community. If you have any questions about this event, the speaker series or have ideas for future presentations, please call us 907-903-1664.
