Intro to Snowshoeing

  • Matanuska Lakes State Rec Area Palmer, AK 99645 (map)

When: Tuesday, February 13 from 5:30PM-7:30PM

Can’t make it? We have another Intro to Snowshoeing event on March 20. Learn more here.

Where: Matanuska Lakes State Recreation Area

About the snowshoe and what to expect: For this intro snowshoeing hike, we will help you strap on snowshoes and then go float on the snow. We will start at the trailhead, spending some time reviewing gear basics and helping everyone get acclimated with their equipment. From there, we’ll set off on a packed trail to get used to walking in snowshoes on a relatively even surface. After we’ve built up our confidence, we’ll leave the trail and start trudging around in the snow. On the powder, you will experience the feeling of floating in the snow. We will cover approximately 2-3 miles of total snowshoe hiking.

Can I bring my pup? No. For this particular event we ask folks to leave pups behind. Thanks for understanding!

Cost:

  • $45 if you have your own snowshoes

  • $60 if you need to rent a pair

  • Adventure Club Bushwhacker members receive a 10% discount.

Do you have scholarships? Yes! We offer community scholarships. Learn more and apply here.

Please note participants are responsible for paying any relevant parking fees. This trailhead is an Alaska State Parks trailhead.

A couple other notes: If you need help finding the trailhead or want to contact Revel prior to the event, please contact the team at 907-903-1664.

What to bring:

  • Bring warm layers

  • Bring comfortable boots or shoes to walk in

  • Bring a headlamp (we have extras you can borrow if needed!)

  • Winter gear (hats, mittens, scarves)

  • Rain gear or snow gear (as necessary)

  • Water and snacks as desired.

A note on flexibility: The nature of adventuring outside requires some flexibility. We do our best to follow the itinerary as outlined, but we may need to shift plans for a variety of reasons. Safety is our priority and we use our best judgment when making trip adjustments.

Weather: We rarely cancel due to inclement weather. Please bring gear to adventure in the elements. If you need to borrow something, let us know! We have lots of extra supplies and are happy to loan items out if needed.

Is Revel still hosting any free community hikes? Yes! We are offering quarterly, free community hikes. We also have free events that have been made possible through partnership and sponsorships. Be sure to check our events page for our most current offerings.
