About the presentation: Learning to mountaineer was full of roadblocks for Colleen. As someone from the flat Midwest with friends and family who loved the indoors, she knew she wanted to learn how to camp and backpack...but wasn't sure how to gain the skills she needed. After making many mistakes trying to learn the ropes, Colleen became a half-decent backpacker and hiker, and when she moved to Alaska she set her sights on Denali.

Learning the skills to attempt a Denali climb turned her from a novice into someone who now teaches glacier travel, crevasse rescue, camping, backpacking, and ice climbing courses. Those skills brought her confidently to base camp, but Denali had other plans...

About Colleen: Colleen Alexis Metzger is a theatrical costumer whose work has taken her around the country. When she came to Alaska, she only intended to stay for a year...but fell in love with the mountains, and all the adventures they held. She's now lived in Alaska for over a decade, where she is a hiker, climber, backpacker, skier, and ultramarathoner.

Cost to attend: Our speaker series are donation-based/pay what you can events. We do not want cost to be a barrier for community members to attend. Funds collected will cover Revel staff time and expenses for the event.
