Short Course: Foraging 101

  • Government Peak Recreation Area North Mountain Trails Drive Fishhook, AK, 99645 United States (map)

When: Thursday, May 29 at 4PM

Please arrive at the trailhead between 3:45PM and 4PM. We will begin our walk promptly at 4PM.

Where: We’ll meet at the Government Peak Recreation Area parking lot

About the class and what to expect: Join Ute Olsson for a 1-hour walk in the woods. Learn how to identify plants correctly, tell them apart from look-a-likes, identify where and when they grow, and discuss foraging etiquette. We’ll be walking/hiking for about 1 hour.

This bi-weekly walk repeats throughout the growing season at Government Peak Recreation Area.

About the instructor: Ute Riesenkönig Olsson received a Master of Forestry from Duke University and a Master of Science in Ecological Studies from Colorado State University. She taught natural history to all ages at the Eagle River Nature Center for two decades before her retirement. Ute’s passionate about ethnobotany - how humans have traditionally used plants in Alaska. You can follow her on Instagram at Borealkraut.

Group size: Maximum class size 10 learners

Please note that we will only collect a few samples during this course. During these classes, we are not harvesting as a group.

Class fees:

  • $12 per person

  • Free for Adventure Club members - thanks for your support!

Parking: Please note that participants are responsible for paying any relevant parking fees. If you need help finding the trailhead or want to contact Revel before the event, please contact the team at 907-903-1664.

Can I bring my pup? No. We ask folks to leave pups behind. Thanks for understanding!

What to bring:

  • Bring warm layers that you feel comfortable moving in

  • Rain gear (as necessary)

  • Water and snacks as desired

  • A notebook and pencil as desired

A note on flexibility: The nature of adventuring outside requires some flexibility. We do our best to follow the itinerary as outlined, but we may need to shift plans for a variety of reasons. Safety is our priority, and we use our best judgment when making trip adjustments.

Trip minimums: We require a minimum of 2 registered participants to run our community adventures. If a scheduled event is canceled due to low sign-ups, participants will receive a full refund or credit toward a future event. Adventure Club members can receive a credit towards future Revel events.

Weather: We rarely cancel due to inclement weather. Please bring gear to adventure in the elements. If you need to borrow something, let us know! We have lots of extra supplies and are happy to loan items out.
