When: Tuesday, June 25, 6:00pm-8:00pm
Where: We’ll meet the Matanuska River Park campground pavilions
What to expect: We’ll be walking/hiking for about 2 hours. This class is about edible plant identification and how to forage sustainably. Please note we will not be harvesting while on the trail.
Workshop description: Many of our native plants are edible, and some have been used traditionally for medicine. Learn to identify them and how to tell them apart from plants that are not safe. Take a walk in the woods with naturalist emerita, Ute Olsson, for an introduction into what we can harvest.
Group Size: Maximum class size 10 learners
Cost:
$35 per person
$30 Adventure Club members
Free for children 12 and under
Can I bring my pup? No. We ask you that leave your furry friends at home for this event. We’ve got other pet-friendly events on the calendar though.
About Ute: Ute Riesenkönig Olsson received a Master of Forestry from Duke University and a Master of Science in Ecological Studies from Colorado State University. She taught natural history to all ages at the Eagle River Nature Center for two decades before her retirement. Ute has a special interest in ethnobotany -- how humans have traditionally used plants in Alaska. You can follow her on instagram at https://www.instagram.com/borealkraut/
What if the weather is bad? We rarely cancel due to inclement weather. Please make sure your child has gear to adventure in the elements. If you need to borrow something, let us know! We have lots of extra supplies and are happy to loan items out if needed.
A note on flexibility: The nature of adventuring outside requires some flexibility. We do our best to follow the schedule as outlined, but trail conditions, wildlife, etc. can all impact our plans. Please know if we need to shift plans your workshop coordinator will communicate with you in a timely manner. Safety is our priority and we use our best judgement when making trip adjustments.
Do you have scholarships? We offer community scholarships through our community adventure fund. Learn more and apply here.
