Community Hike: September Sunset at April Bowl

  • Summit Lake Parking Area (Hatcher Pass) (map)

Registration required. There is no cost to join us, but we do ask you sign up so we don’t leave any stragglers behind at the trailhead!

When: Thursday, September 14 from 5:30pm-7:30pm

Where: April Bowl to Hatch Peak trail, approximately 2.2 miles round trip. We will meet at the Summit Lake Recreation Area parking lot. The trailhead begins at the parking lot.

This area is accessed by taking the Hatcher Pass road towards Willow (the gravel road going left up the mountain across from the Hatcher Pass Lodge).  Be aware that the road is gravel with some sharp switchbacks and steep drop-offs; drive slowly at your own risk. In the event the road closes before our hike date, we will provide an alternate hiking location.

About the hike and what to expect: This trail is about 2.2 miles with 800 feet of elevation gain to an altitude of approximately 4,800 feet. The first part of the trail is fairly steep with switchbacks as you traverse the side of the mountain up to a set of glacial lakes. From there, the trail gets rocky and steep as you follow the ridge up to Hatch Peak. At the top you are rewarded with sweeping views of crystal blue glacial lakes and views of the Talkeetna Mountains, Hatcher Pass, Willow, and the Mat-Su Valley.

Can I bring my pup? No. For this particular event we ask folks to leave pups behind. Thanks for understanding!

Cost: This is a free community event. Parking is free at Summit Lake Recreation Area.

A couple other notes: If you need help finding the trailhead or want to contact Revel prior to the event, please contact Emily at 870-866-7380. Please note, there is no cell service from the parking lot and trailhead.

What to bring: Bring warm layers, rain gear, water and snacks as desired.

A note on flexibility: The nature of adventuring outside requires some flexibility. We do our best to follow the itinerary as outlined, but trail conditions, wildlife, etc. can all impact our plans. Please know if we need to shift plans your guide will communicate with you in a timely manner. Safety is our priority and we use our best judgment when making trip adjustments.

Weather: We rarely cancel due to inclement weather. Please bring gear to adventure in the elements. If you need to borrow something, let us know! We have lots of extra supplies and are happy to loan items out if needed.

About Community Hikes: Explore a local trail/area in the company of other hikers. We hike at a leisurely pace and chat along the way. These are social outings and opportunities to build community with local outdoor-lovers.
