Kids Explore: Picnics, Plants and Ponds

When: Tuesday, June 20 from noon to 2pm.

Where: Matanuska Lakes State Recreation Area

Ideal Ages: This program is best suited for children ages 6 to 10 years old

Group Size: No more than 10 total (young adventurers)

Workshop Summary: In this mini workshop for younger kids, workshop participants will enjoy a picnic in Matanuska Lakes State Recreation Area and learn about Palmer’s beautiful and vital plant and pond life. Workshop includes story time outside, an interpretative hike, an educational game, and hands-on activities illustrating the significance and beauty of Alaska’s plants and pond ecosystems.

Are parents/guardians required to attend? Yes. At this time our program requires a parent or guardian to be present during youth workshops.

About Dylan: Dylan, who originally hails from New England, has been working, studying and living in Alaska for 2 years now. She is currently a graduate student studying outdoor and environmental education at Alaska Pacific University as well as an outdoor science school teacher at the Kellogg F.I.E.L.D School on Alaska Pacific University's Palmer campus. After graduating with her undergraduate degree from Emerson College in Boston, MA in 2014, Dylan became a public school teacher for three years before transitioning into the world of outdoor education and recreation. She has worked with students from preschool age to college-age and is excited to be facilitating and implementing youth programming for Revel this summer! In her free time, she can most likely be found in nature doing something fun, listening to podcasts, or scheming her next adventure abroad.

Can I bring my pup? No. We ask you leave your furry friends at home for this event.

Cost: $35 for first child, $19 for each additional child

About Matanuska Lakes State Rec Area:

The trailhead is an Alaska State Parks trailhead. Parking fees are not included in the cost of this workshop.

What if the weather is bad?

Great question. We generally don’t cancel trips due to inclement weather. We bring gear for the elements and have plenty of extras if you need to borrow something. If there is concern for safety and we need to adjust the trip, we will reschedule and notify participants in a timely manner.

Do you offer scholarships or payment plans?
