When: Friday, February 16 at 9PM
Where: The West Butte trailhead. We’ll climb the West Butte and facilitate our photography workshop at the summit.
About the hike and what to expect:
We’ll be hiking about 1.5 miles to the Butte summit. The terrain is a wide snow packed trail for the first half the hike. At the halfway mark we begin a steeper climb up a series of stairs and switch backs. This portion of the trail can be very ice packed and we recommend wearing ice cleats. We will move at a leisurely pace before arriving to the summit. This is an out-and-back trail with a total elevation gain of about 900 feet.
About the workshop:
Once on top of the Butte we will make ourselves comfortable and begin our photography workshop. Learn the art of capturing the Aurora Borealis and night sky, from camera settings to composition tips, in an engaging and hands-on workshop with local photographer Dan Mcdonough.
We'll have hot cocoa and tea available to participants at the summit.
After a couple hours of photography we'll start our descent back to the trailhead.
Cost:
$40 for participants
$30 for Adventure Club members (both Bushwhacker and Trailblazer members receive this pricing)
Do you have scholarships available? Yes! We offer community scholarships. Learn more and apply here.
Can I bring my pup? Not for this event. Thanks for understanding.
A couple other notes: If you need help finding the trailhead or want to contact Revel prior to the event, please contact Kierre at 907-903-1664.
What to bring:
Comfortable & warm trail shoes or hiking boots
Warm layers including an insulating jacket
Winter gear (hats, mittens, scarves, as needed)
Camera with manual focus
Cell phones have come a long way! If you don’t have a camera with this function, there are some phone apps that make aurora photography possible.
Sturdy tripod (recommended)
Notebook and pen for photography tips (as desired)
Hand warmers (as desired)
Head lamp (we have loaners available)
Ice cleats (we have loaners available)
Water and snacks as desired
A note on flexibility: The nature of adventuring outside requires some flexibility. We do our best to follow the itinerary as outlined, but trail conditions, wildlife, etc. can all impact our plans. Please know if we need to shift plans your guide will communicate with you in a timely manner. We will use our best judgment when making trip adjustments. Please understand we cannot guarantee aurora viewing.
Weather & aurora forecast:
We rarely cancel due to inclement weather. Since this trip requires some degree of visibility and aurora viewing, we will assess the conditions the day prior to our workshop. If conditions warrant cancellation we will notify participants 24 hours in advance and send a full refund.
Please bring gear to adventure in the elements. If you need to borrow something, let us know! We have lots of extra supplies and are happy to loan items out if needed.
