Salve Making: An outdoor workshop with Ute

  • Crevasse Moraine North Loma Prieta Drive Gateway, AK, 99645 United States (map)

When: Saturday, April 6

Where: We’ll meet at the Crevasse Moraine Trailhead Pavillion (from the N. Loma Prieta Trailhead). Please arrive between 1:45PM and 2PM so we can begin our class promptly at 2PM.

Class cost:

  • Course fees are $55 per person.

  • Adventure Club members, $49 per person.

What's included: All workshop materials and supplies

Parking: Please note participants are responsible for paying relevant parking fees.

Is registration required? Yes. To maintain our small group size (max 8 participants) we ask that you register in advance.

About the class: Join Ute Olsson of Borealkraut for an afternoon of outdoor learning and making. Learn about harvesting cottonwood buds and basic foraging etiquette. Following our short stroll, we’ll review the principles of making salves, followed by a salve-making demonstration. Participants will each take home one 2oz. container of cottonwood salve.

All workshop material is provided in the course fees.

Please note that while we will be making things using items from the boreal forest, the course does not go into details about harvesting plants other than cottonwood buds. We offer foraging classes during the summer season, so be sure to join our mailing list for plant identification & foraging classes.

What to expect: This is a 2-part class.

  • Part 1: Short walk and foraging lesson: We will walk the trail, learn to distinguish cottonwoods from other trees, and discuss foraging etiquette, tips, and tricks for harvesting cottonwood buds. We will walk less than .5 miles on the trail. Ice cleats are recommended.

  • Part 2: Maker session: During the second part of the course, we'll talk about salve-making basics and use pre-harvested material to make a cottonwood salve in the outdoor pavilion. Participants will bring home one 2 oz jar of cottonwood bud salve (a.k.a. "Balm of Gilead").

About Ute: Ute Riesenkönig Olsson received a Master of Forestry from Duke University and a Master of Science in Ecological Studies from Colorado State University. She taught natural history to all ages at the Eagle River Nature Center for two decades before her retirement. Ute has a special interest in ethnobotany - how humans have traditionally used plants in Alaska. Follow her on Instagram at Borealkraut.

A note on flexibility: The nature of adventuring outside requires some flexibility. We do our best to follow the itinerary as outlined, but we may need to shift plans for a variety of reasons. Safety is our priority, and we use our best judgment when making trip adjustments.

Trip minimums: We require a minimum of 2 registered participants to run our community adventures. If a scheduled event is canceled due to low sign-ups, participants will receive a full refund or credit toward a future event. Adventure Club members can receive a credit toward future Revel events.

Weather: We rarely cancel due to inclement weather. Please bring gear to adventure in the elements. If you need to borrow something, let us know! We have lots of extra supplies and are happy to loan items out.
