Winter Speaker Series: Ahtna Language 101

Where (please note LOCATION CHANGE): We’ll meet in the Turkey Red Banquet Room. The restaurant is closed on Monday evenings, please use other building entrance points to access the banquet room.

Is registration required? No. Registration will be opening soon. If you’d like to let us know you’re planning to attend, feel free to use the button above to register. Please note this venue has limited seating. Once seats are full, we shift to standing-room. If you prefer to sit during the presentation, please arrive early to ensure you have a seat.

About the presentation: Sondra Shaginoff will be sharing about Ahtna Language, place names, introductions, and the UAA Ahtna Language classes being offered in the spring of 2024. 

About Sondra Shaginoff-Stuart: Sondra is from Nay’dina’a’na’ Kayax (Chickaloon Village) Ahtna Dene and Kooyooe Tiukadu, Pyramid Lake Paiute (Nevada) reservation. She is a mother of three, and grandmother to her precious granddaughter. Currently, she is an Assistant Professor of the Alaska Native Studies at the University of Alaska, Anchorage, and the Language and Cultural Director for Chickaloon Village Traditional Council. Sondra runs and operates her own business, Nakenaege’ Dahwsel’deldiix-Our Language Came Back, and contracts with tribes on Native Language work.

She is a Ph.D. candidate working on advancing the Ahtna Dene Language through cultural projects and healing language practice, from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. She currently serves on the Kenaitze Indian Tribe’s Education Committee.

Sondra believes in serving her people in the best way possible, thinking good for Indigenous people through this process of education and cultural practices.

Cost to attend: Our speaker series are donation-based/pay what you can events. We do not want cost to be a barrier for community members to attend. Funds collected will cover Revel staff time and expenses for the event.

What is the winter speaker series? Revel is hosting monthly educational lectures/presentations November 2023 through April 2024. Each month features a different topic with the goal of connecting locals to the area where they live.
